Jerry Seguin’s collages are rooted in his formal training as an apparel and textile designer as well as in his love for art history and photography.
This sense of design, this love of colour, form and quality of line gives Seguins collages a graphic aesthetic that eschews the surreal quality of the collage process in favour of a more restrained stylistic approach. Rather than always looking for new images to play with Seguin often uses his own work, scans his photography, paintings and embroidery into the computer and plays with them, manipulates them like putty in his hands.
Like a jazz musician he riffs off the original work, constantly looking for new ideas hidden within the old, exploiting and mutating the formal aspects of the original design until a new clean, elegant artwork is born, a collge that combines the rigours of fashion and the freedom of art.
