Nicola Kuperus is both a photographer and musician but it’s her Hitchock-esque fashion pictures from her series ‘Colorful World’ that are most interesting. There is something unsettling about them as if we’re witnessing the final chapter of a macabre story, one with a gruesome ending.
These photographs are all about form with Kuperus posing her models in stiff, unnatural poses, their bodies cropped, out of frame, anonymous leaving us to fill in the blanks. Each picture colour coded, beautifully cold, frozen, icy. There is no emotional content in these stories, it’s as if she’s sucked the humanity out of the scene in order for us to pour it back in.
Dislocation, violence, the end of life in a perfect suburban world. All in beautiful clothes and wearing wonderful shoes.
